The following are brief career summaries of our two principals:

 Bill Owen

Bill is a Chartered Naval Architect with over 36 years experience in ship and boat design, build, repair and conversion. After gaining his degree in Naval Architecture from Newcastle upon Tyne University, Bill worked at the Sunderland yard, Austin & Pickersgill, where he was responsible for implementing and running new computer based design and production control systems.

Bill then moved to the Birkenhead yard of Cammell Laird Shipbuilders, where he was the steelwork manager responsible for the construction of the jack-up accommodation platform, AV-1. Bill was also Senior Project Leader responsible for planning, costing and build-strategy of Royal Naval ships.

Bill then worked as a self-employed Naval Architect and Surveyor, working on the design and build of workboats, yachts, pleasure craft and passenger ships.

Bill then joined McTay Marine as Principal Naval Architect, where he worked for 4 years. During this period he worked on the preliminary and detailed design and build of newbuild tugs, trawlers, ferries, landing craft and other vessels up to 50m in length.

Bill then became Technical Manager at Cammell Laird Technical Services. Bill was responsible for the management of the company's naval architects and structural draughtsmen employed on conversion projects undertaken by the Birkenhead shipyard.

Bill left Cammell Laird and became a self-employed Consultant Naval Architect before joining forces with Nicholas to form the CMD Group.

 Nicholas Barton

Nicholas is a Chartered Naval Architect with over 25 years experience in ship and boat design, build, repair and conversion. After completing a technician apprenticeship with the UK Ministry of Defence (Navy Department), he gained his degree in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding from Newcastle upon Tyne University.

He then worked as a naval architect at the McTay Marine shipyard on the River Mersey for 7 years. During this period he worked on the design and build of approximately 40 newbuild tugs, trawlers, ferries, landing craft and other vessels up to 50m in length.

Following this he worked at the Liverpool based marine design company, Consultancy Services Northern Ltd. With its sister companies, CSN purchased the Birkenhead shipyard, Cammell Laird, in 1993 and Nicholas became the Technical Director of the newly formed marine technical services subsidiary, employing a total of 150 naval architects, marine and electrical design engineers and draughtsmen. During this period he was responsible for the design and technical management of the repair and conversion projects undertaken by all the groups shipyards.

Following a period as Naval Architecture Manager at the Birkenhead based consultancy company, Ocean Fleets Ltd, Nicholas joined forces with Bill to form the CMD Group.
